What began as a simple shipping container has now become a fully functional, state of the art clinic expanding access to child orthopaedic care at Kilifi County Referral Hospital.

As demand for services continued to grow, the Orthopaedic Department faced a familiar challenge in many public health facilities: limited space, yet increasing need. More children were seeking treatment for clubfoot and other orthopaedic conditions, and the hospital required additional room to serve them efficiently and with dignity.
That need sparked collaboration.
Recognising the opportunity to strengthen services, Hope Walks mobilised partners to support the expansion. BUILD at Texas A&M University, a student-led nonprofit organisation that designs and fabricates fully equipped medical clinics from 40-foot shipping containers, stepped in to donate and transform a container into a clinical space. The students renovated it from top to bottom, dedicating time, skill, and heart to ensure it would serve children well.
Medical Bridges then equipped the clinic with essential medical supplies, ensuring that once operational, the space would be ready to support quality care from day one.
Last fall, the clinic began its journey across the ocean to Kenya. After several months in transit, it arrived in Kilifi and was installed within the grounds of Kilifi County Referral Hospital. On site, further works were completed, including cutting doors and windows, connecting electricity and plumbing, and constructing a protective patio roof to shelter both the clinic and the families who will use it.
The official launch marked a milestone moment for Kilifi County. Through the leadership of the Kilifi County Department of Health, the County Health Management Team, hospital administration, Hope Walks, Clubfoot Care for Kenya, and global partners, the hospital now has expanded capacity to deliver clubfoot and other orthopaedic services to children across the region.
This clinic is more than a structure. It represents responsive partnership, strengthened health systems, and a shared commitment to ensuring that every child has access to timely, quality orthopaedic care.
Together, we are creating space for healing and helping children take confident steps toward a brighter future.
